The Associations between Child Irritability, Parental Distress, Parental Irritability and Family Functioning in Children Accessing Mental Health Services

Abstract Irritability, characterised by anger, frustration, and emotional dysregulation, is a common transdiagnostic symptom associated with child adolescent referrals to mental health services significant negative outcomes. Despite this, little known about the link between irritability broader family environment. The present study described parental dysfunction in families of 51 children adolescents (aged 6 15 years) severe referred Victorian public services. Further, we aimed explore associations children’s irritability, parent functioning (parental distress irritability), dysfunction. Child was measured on Affective Reactivity Index (ARI) obtained from participating their primary parent/caregiver (90% mothers). Participants psychiatric diagnoses were using Development Well-Being Assessment through an interview parents who also provided ratings own (Kessler 6), (ARI), (McMaster Family Device). We found high rates (80%) 39% reported moderate psychological distress. Higher self-reported moderately lower All other relationships examined non-significant. Findings suggest complex relationship childhood implications for treatment discussed.
